The antidote to exhaustion is not necessarily rest.
The antidote to exhaustion is wholeheartedness. ~ David Whyte, Poet
Chip Conley describes Luther as a Modern Elder in his latest book, Wisdom @ Work: The Making of a Modern Elder. Studies have shown that diverse work teams and, in particular, multi-generational teams, deliver better outcomes. In Silicon Valley where the average age of company employees, including leaders and CEOs, is getting younger by the day, the wisdom of experience and emotional intelligence (EQ) is needed more than ever to achieve high-quality results and, in some cases, avoid company-ending mistakes. Luther not only exemplifies that wisdom and honed EQ, but has made the transition in his own life from successful corporate executive and entrepreneur to highly respected leadership coach. Thus, he is the epitome of a Modern Elder whose focus is to create the conditions for others to step into their best selves and share their gifts with the world. In his new book, Chip describes Luther as an "Obi-Wan Kenobi of Silicon Valley" - "In many ways, Luther is like a Jedi Master. He trains leaders to get out of their own way and tap into the power of the Force within themselves."
Luther has been building high-tech companies from the ground up for more than 25 years (15+ at the executive level). He has led numerous companies as VP of Engineering, growing teams from zero to over 100 people in multiple geographies around the world. He has successfully built new teams, taken over existing teams, and handled turnaround situations. He co-founded two companies (MATRIXX and eMotion) and was a member of the founding team of two others (TiVo and Navio). Of the six startups he was a part of, all were acquired, taken through an IPO or are still thriving. Luther’s high-tech career started by earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Computer Science from Brown University. See Luther's LinkedIn profile for more information.
Luther has been passionate about and engaged in personal development for more than 25 years. He is a Certified Integral Coach through New Ventures West (an International Coach Federation Accredited Coach Training Program), a Faculty Coach at the Aletheia School where he is a Level 1 & 2 Certified Integral Unfoldment Coach, a Meditation Instructor, a Tilt 365 Certified Practitioner, an Internal Family Systems (IFS) Facilitator, a Voice Dialogue Facilitator, and a Jungian based Dreamwork Facilitator. Through his training he has also developed a detailed understanding of neuroscience, the Enneagram, and Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE). In his executive coaching work, this experience enables Luther to address root causes rather than just surface behaviors of his clients’ issues.
Luther’s years of executive leadership and engineering experience along with his extensive coaching and personal development training results in a unique and powerful combination as an executive coach. Unlike many coaches out there he is both formally trained and he walks in the shoes of his clients.
Luther lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, three children, dog, and chickens. He enjoys biking and skiing in the sunny outdoors, meditation, and good wine. He has traveled extensively throughout six of the seven continents.
